Help Us Improve Life with Heart Failure and an ICD.

The CarvTop-ICD trial is a national research study comparing two standard, FDA-approved heart medications. The study focuses on patients with heart failure who also have an implantable defibrillator. The aim of the study is to determine which study medication is better able to prevent shocks, improve outcomes and quality of life.

The CarvTop-ICD study is a research study for people with heart failure who have an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Heart failure is commonly treated with medications called beta blockers, which help protect the heart and improve long-term health. Two of the most commonly used beta blockers are metoprolol succinate and carvedilol. Both medications are FDA approved and frequently prescribed for patients with heart failure. But doctors do not know which one is better. The CarvTop-ICD study will answer this important question.

Who can join this study?

You can talk to your doctor about joining the study if:

You have been diagnosed with heart failure (reduced heart function).

You have an implantable defibrillator (often referred to as an ICD).

You are currently taking metoprolol succinate (also known as Toprol XL).

Not sure if you qualify? Your doctor can quickly verify your eligibility during your next regular visit.

The study is especially interested in enrolling women and people from underrepresented communities, since these groups are often not well represented in research.

All participants in the study will receive standard, guideline-approved heart-failure therapy and will continue to undergo regular follow-up with their healthcare team. The study compares two proven medications (carvedilol vs metoprolol succinate) that are routinely used in the treatment of heart failure.

Metoprolol Succinate (Toprol XL)

It specifically targets the heart to keep your rhythm steady and lowers your heart rate gently.

  • Slows the heart rate and helps control abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Helps the heart work more efficiently.
  • Allows the heart to function optimally by using less energy
  • Usually causes less drop in blood pressure when standing
  • Very well tolerated, Guideline recommended & FDA approved heart-failure therapy.

Focused Action

Carvedilol (Coreg)

It works on the heart and also relaxes your blood vessels, which can help lower blood pressure and reduce strain on the heart.

  • Slows the heart and reduces strain.
  • Relaxes blood vessels.
  • Allows blood to flow more easily through relaxed vessels
  • May influence stress hormones differently.
  • Very well tolerated, Guideline recommended & FDA approved heart-failure therapy.
